We know that Jamie Foxx is playing Electro in the latest Spider-Man film, and now Hollywood Reporter brings new information about the casting of another villain. According to the article, Paul Giamatti (American Splendor) is in talks to play Rhino, Spidey’s brute, witless foil. In most of his incarnations the character gets its super-strength from a rhinoceros-inspired exoskeleton, complete with a horn on his head.
Paul Giamatti most recently appeared in ‘John Dies at the End’
Rhino has always been portrayed as a dimwitted henchman, working for shrewder, more dangerous antagonists. I wonder if he’ll work for Norman Osborn in the film, or if they’ll introduce Kingpin or a similar character.
Giamatti has been professing his love for the character for years now. He told ShowbizSpy in 2011:
“I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid, it was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit, and I always thought, ‘Why don’t they have The Rhino in one of their movies.’ But maybe The Rhino wasn’t that big of a deal for anybody but me. … If they ever go with The Rhino, I would be ready and waiting.”
He even expressed his interest for the role to Conan O’Brien:
“The Rhino was fantastic, he was, like, a Russian guy. He was real fast, and he hit stuff real hard.
…
I think I would be the best Rhino possible.“
It has also been reported that Felicity Jones is negotiating for an unnamed role. The cast for The Amazing Spider-man 2 is already looking crowded with new characters. Along with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx plays Electro, like we previously said, Shailene Woodley stars as the new Mary Jane, and Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborne. Marc Webb returns as the director, and the final draft of the script is penned by Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci. The film is slated to release on May 2, 2014, and shooting will begin next month in New York, as reported by On Location Vacations.
