I can’t believe it’s been a decade since the world was stunned by the most brazen terrorist attack.  The upcoming drama film, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, is an adaptation of one of the first works of fiction to address 9/11 of the same name written by Jonathan Safran Foer.  Eric Roth (Forrest GumpThe Curious Case of Benjamin ButtonThe InsiderMunich and Ali) wrote the screenplay based on the 2005 novel and it is directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy ElliotThe HoursThe Reader).

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close tells the story of one young boy’s journey from heartbreaking loss to the healing power of self-discovery, set against the backdrop of the tragic events of September 11.  It centers the nine-year-old child prodigy, Oskar Schell, who is an amateur inventor, Francophile, astrophysicist, tambourine player and pacifist.  He finds a mysterious key that belonged to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11.  The key leads him to an urgent, secret search through the five boroughs of New York for the lock that matches the key.  As Oskar roams the city, he encounters a motley assortment of humanity, who are all survivors in their own ways.

In Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, America’s Sweatheart, Sandra Bullock, and America’s Leading Man, Tom Hanks, finally team up in a movie.  How come this is only happening now?  These two should have teamed up years ago.

The Good Stuff?

With the Oscars season not too far away, the contenders are lining up.  Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close brings out Academy Awards heavyweights with Academy Award Winner Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks, Three-time Academy Awards Nominee Stephen Daldry (btw, all of his previous feature films he directed earned him a nomination, will this one final close the deal for him?), Academy Award Winner for best screenplay Eric Roth and two-time Academy Awards Winner (Best Cinematography) Chris Menges.  With this line up, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, should be one of the films to look out for.

The Bad Stuff?

This feels like it’s going to be a very sad, heart wrenching film.  I don’t think my bleeding heart can take this lost little boy running around the city trying to find some sort of connection to his deceased father.  The trailer alone already got me teary-eyed, how much more the whole movie? Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is way too sad to watch on Christmas day.
